Geological Information
Azurite Malachite is a naturally occurring combination of two copper carbonate hydroxide minerals (Mohs 3.5-4, monoclinic), azurite in blue and malachite in green, found together in the oxidised zones of copper ore deposits. Both share the same copper-carbonate chemistry, with the colour difference determined by the water content of the crystal structure, and azurite gradually converts to malachite over geological time, which is why the two are so often found together. It is untreated natural material. Both minerals have been used since antiquity, azurite as a primary blue pigment in medieval European art and malachite in Egyptian and Russian decorative traditions. It is sourced primarily from Morocco and Arizona, with material also from the Congo, Russia, and Australia.
