Tiger Eye is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, a silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal structure, formed as a pseudomorph in which silica gradually replaced parallel crocidolite fibres while preserving their alignment. That fibre structure produces the chatoyant cat's eye band of light. The replacement is complete, so the finished stone is fully silica and safe to handle. It was worn by Roman soldiers as a protective talisman. Primary sources are South Africa, with additional material from India, Australia, the USA, and Brazil.
