Its purple to violet colour is produced by iron impurities and natural irradiation within the crystal lattice, ranging from palest lilac to deep royal purple. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek amethystos, meaning "not drunk," as it was worn across Greek and Roman cultures as a talisman against intoxication, and it has been used extensively in royal and ecclesiastical jewellery throughout European history.
