Red Jasper is a chalcedony variety from the quartz family, silicon dioxide, with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system, its red colour coming from iron oxide, or hematite, distributed through the silica matrix. It is one of the most widely distributed and historically used jaspers, worked across ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Europe as a seal stone and protective amulet, and it is named as one of the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate. The opaque, evenly coloured body is characteristic of the material. Principal sources include Brazil, India, Russia, and the United States.
