Geological Information
Kyanite is an aluminium silicate of the kyanite family, crystallising in the triclinic system as elongated bladed crystals with a distinctive striated surface. Its blue colour comes from iron impurities and its green from chromium or vanadium. Kyanite has one of the most unusual physical properties of any common mineral: its hardness varies along different crystal axes, measuring around 4.5 lengthwise but 6.5 to 7 across, a demonstrable anisotropy that is itself a key identifier. The name derives from the Greek kyanos, meaning blue. Documented sources include Brazil, Nepal, Tibet, the United States, Kenya and India, the source of this material, with green Kyanite drawn chiefly from Brazil and India.

Care Note
Kyanite is soft along the length of its blades (around Mohs 4.5) and can scratch or split along that direction, even though it is harder across the blade. Handle it gently, avoid knocking it against hard surfaces, and store it apart from harder stones.
