Blue Onyx is a trade name commonly used for dyed blue calcite rather than true chalcedony onyx. The material is calcium carbonate at a Mohs hardness of about 3, significantly softer than true quartz-based onyx, and the blue colour is produced by dyeing pale calcite; this dye treatment is the industry standard for the material, the colour is generally stable, and it is disclosed here in full. Despite the name, the blue form has no ancient tradition and is a modern commercial product. This material is sourced from Brazil, with further material from India.
