Agate is a variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, a silicon dioxide that forms in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its bands form as silica-rich hydrothermal fluids fill cavities in host rock, each layer recording a separate deposition event, and where the cavity did not fill completely, small druzy quartz crystals line the remaining hollow, producing the sparkling centre seen here; the concentric "eye" pattern is a classic expression of this layered banding. Agate is among the oldest documented gemstones in human use, named by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus after the Achates River in Sicily, and used across ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome.
