The Red Crackle Quartz Sphere is a fully polished orb of Clear Quartz that has been thermal-shock crackled and colour-treated red, so a network of fine internal fractures catches the light throughout the stone in deep red and reddish-brown. Geological Information
This is Clear Quartz, a silicon dioxide at a Mohs hardness of 7, that has been treated to create the crackled red effect. The quartz is heated and then rapidly cooled, a process called thermal shock that crazes the interior with a network of fine internal fractures, the look traditionally marketed as "Fire and Ice." Coloured dye is then drawn into those fractures to produce the red colouration; the red is a man-made colour treatment, not a natural feature of the quartz, and the dye sits within the internal cracks.
