Pyrite is an iron sulphide (FeS2, Mohs 6-6.5) that crystallises in the cubic system, here as a dense mass of small brass-yellow crystals. Its metallic lustre and gold colour are behind its nickname Fool's Gold, though the cubic crystal form is a definitive identifier that it is not gold. The name derives from the Greek pyr, meaning fire, as Pyrite produces sparks when struck, and it was used for fire-starting across cultures since prehistoric times; Aztec and Inca cultures polished Pyrite into mirrors that have been recovered archaeologically. Principal sources include Peru, along with Spain, Italy, Bolivia and the USA.
