It forms as prismatic crystals lining geodes and vugs, with Zambian material noted for exceptional clarity and a blue-violet secondary hue. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek amethystos, meaning not drunk, and it was worn across Greek and Roman cultures as a talisman against intoxication and used extensively in royal and ecclesiastical jewellery. The material is sourced chiefly from Brazil, Uruguay, and Zambia, with further deposits in Madagascar and Russia.
