Snowflake Obsidian is a black volcanic glass, silicon dioxide in amorphous form with a hardness of 5 to 5.5, containing spherical clusters of white cristobalite, a high-temperature form of silica. These clusters form as the glass slowly begins to devitrify, or partially crystallise, which is the material starting its transformation back toward a crystalline state, and they appear as the characteristic pale snowflake blooms. The material shares the volcanic-glass prehistory of black obsidian and is sourced chiefly from the United States and Mexico.
