Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral (Mohs 3.5-4, trigonal), pink to deep rose-red from its manganese content, with a distinctive concentric pink and white banding that is one of the most recognisable patterns in retail crystals. Its name derives from the Greek rhodon, meaning rose, and chros, meaning colour. It is untreated natural material. Argentine material deposited in ancient Inca silver mines is among the most prized; the Incas called it Inca Rose, believing it to be the blood of former rulers turned to stone. It is sourced from Argentina, with additional material from South Africa, Colorado in the USA, Peru, and China.
