Bowenite Worry Stone cut to a compact oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The green is deep and even, considerably richer than most serpentine, and the material is translucent enough at the edges that light passes through and lifts the colour from within. The lustre is waxy and the surface very smooth, with the stone light in the hand for its apparent density.

Serpentine is traditionally associated with change and with clearing a path through it, more often chosen for encouragement through a transition than for comfort during one. Geological Information
Bowenite is a traditional trade name for a variety of Serpentine. Although some serpentine deposits in nature may be associated with asbestos-forming minerals, polished Bowenite is widely used as an ornamental stone. Serpentine is not a single mineral but a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals, Mohs 3 to 5, crystallising in the monoclinic system, and the name refers to the resemblance of the mottled green to snakeskin. Bowenite specifically is the translucent gem-quality form of that group, harder and more evenly coloured than common serpentine, which is why it is the variety most often cut for jewellery. The material is widely used as a jade substitute and sometimes sold as jade, which it is not. Serpentine was worked in ancient China, Egypt and across Mesoamerica, though Maori pounamu is nephrite rather than serpentine despite both being green. Commercial sources include New Zealand, Italy, South Africa, the USA, Afghanistan and China.
