Blue Chalcedony Worry Stone cut to a smooth oval with a thumb hollow across one face. The colour is a soft pale blue to blue-grey, closer to a cloudy sky than to a saturated gemstone blue, with faint banding running through some pieces and others reading almost uniform. The polish is high and the material is faintly translucent at the edges, cool and very smooth under a thumb.

Blue Chalcedony is traditionally associated with calm and with measured speech, and it was worked into seals across Near Eastern and Mediterranean cultures long before it carried any of those associations. Geological Information
Blue Chalcedony is a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Its colour is unusual in that it comes from no pigment at all: submicroscopic inclusions within the silica scatter short-wavelength blue light preferentially, an optical phenomenon called the Tyndall effect, and it is the same mechanism that makes the sky blue. The colour is therefore structural rather than chemical, which is why it shifts subtly with the angle and quality of light falling on it and why no dye is involved or possible in producing it. The material was used in ancient seal carving across Near Eastern and Mediterranean cultures.
