Geological Information
Quartz with Green Tourmaline is a naturally occurring combination of clear or white quartz, silicon dioxide in the trigonal system at Mohs 7, containing inclusions of green tourmaline, typically elbaite, a cyclosilicate. The tourmaline grew through the quartz while both were forming, and it appears either as fine needles resembling rutilated quartz or as larger discrete crystal inclusions depending on the conditions of growth. The green comes from chromium or vanadium trace content within the tourmaline rather than from the quartz, which contributes no colour of its own. This should not be confused with rutilated quartz, where the needles are titanium oxide and typically gold or reddish rather than green. No treatment is involved; both minerals are natural and the relationship between them is a genuine intergrowth. Brazil is the primary source, with further material from Afghanistan and East Africa.
