Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminium oxide with a Mohs hardness of 9, second only to diamond, coloured red by chromium impurities. Heat treatment to improve clarity and colour is near-universal in commercial ruby and is an accepted industry standard, so opaque tumbled material of this kind can generally be assumed heat-treated; lead-glass filling is also used in lower-grade material and, where present, would be disclosed. It is a natural material. Origins: Myanmar (the Mogok Valley) is historically the finest source, with material also from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Mozambique, Madagascar, and India.
