Quartz forms across an unusually wide range of geological environments, from slow growth in hydrothermal veins and pegmatite cavities to accumulation in sedimentary deposits, and silicon dioxide is the most abundant mineral compound in the Earth's crust, occurring on every continent. The mineral is piezoelectric, generating an electrical charge under mechanical stress, which makes it one of the most industrially significant minerals in use today, found in watches, oscillators, and precision instruments.
