Geological Information
Three of the four stones in this set are quartz-family materials rating 7 on the Mohs scale. Clear Quartz is silicon dioxide in its purest form, colourless because there are no impurities to absorb light, and among the most abundant minerals on Earth; its piezoelectric behaviour, generating an electric charge under mechanical stress, makes it one of the most industrially important minerals in use. Tiger Eye is a chalcedony formed by pseudomorphism, in which silica gradually replaces blue crocidolite fibres while preserving their parallel alignment, and the silky moving light band across its surface is produced by light reflecting off that fibre structure. Citrine is the yellow to orange-brown quartz variety, named from the French citron. Black Onyx is a banded chalcedony, and the deep black of commercial material is produced by dyeing: natural grey banded chalcedony is treated by the sugar-acid or iron nitrate process standardised in Idar-Oberstein, Germany from the nineteenth century onward. The treatment is stable and permanent and is industry standard for this stone. Clear Quartz is found on every continent, Tiger Eye principally in South Africa, Citrine in Brazil and Uruguay, and Black Onyx primarily in Brazil; this set was assembled in India.
