Geological Information
Crazy Lace Agate is a chalcedony variety in the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, distinguished by wild, irregular looping and swirling banding. The reds, yellows, creams and greys come from iron oxide and other mineral variation, and the complex patterning is caused by intricate fluid movement during silica deposition. It is sometimes called Mexican Agate or Happy Lace Agate, and its warm palette and visual complexity make it one of the more immediately appealing agates. There is limited pre-colonial Mexican record for it; it is primarily a twentieth-century commercial discovery. It comes almost exclusively from Chihuahua state in Mexico.
