Green Onyx is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with a trigonal crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 7. The trade name covers two genuinely different materials: naturally green microcrystalline quartz, produced principally in Pakistan, and grey chalcedony dyed green, much of it from Brazil. Pakistani material is undyed, with the green intrinsic to the stone and the banding running through its full thickness rather than sitting on the surface. Treatment status is confirmed with the supplier per piece rather than assumed from the trade name. Pakistan is the primary source of natural green material.
