The branching formations that give it its name are called dendrites, and they form when manganese or iron oxide crystals grow through fractures in the silica during formation, spreading in a fractal pattern that closely resembles ferns or trees. Those inclusions are frequently mistaken for fossilised plants; they are purely mineral formations with no organic material involved, and the resemblance is a matter of crystal growth mechanics rather than biology.
