Deviant Moon Tarot Deck

Deviant Moon Tarot is Patrick Valenza's alternative reading of traditional Tarot, drawing its symbolism from childhood dreams. The moon-faced figures are built from manipulated photographs of eighteenth-century tombstones and set against surreal grounds of distant smoke stacks, asylums and abandoned buildings. The card backs are symmetrical and show the phases of the moon. A booklet carries the card descriptions.

Symmetrical backs are a practical decision rather than a design flourish: with no orientation cue on the reverse, a card's reversal cannot be read before it is turned, so reversed readings hold up under a deck this heavily used. The booklet covers both orientations for every card and adds a ten-card spread laid out in the shape of a full moon, drawing its logic from that circular arrangement. The imagery is genuinely unsettling in places and the deck does not soften it, which is why it tends to suit readers who want a card to unnerve them into looking properly rather than reassure them.
