Dragon Blood Jasper is a commercial trade name rather than a geological one: it is not a true silica-based jasper but a composite metamorphic rock of green epidote with red piemontite or iron oxide inclusions, at a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7. The green comes from the epidote content and the red from the piemontite, and the alternating colours produce the distinctive dragon-scale effect. It is a late 20th-century commercial discovery from South African mining, with no documented ancient tradition, and is also sold as Dragon Blood Stone.
