Geological Information
Lapis Lazuli is a rock rather than a single mineral, composed primarily of lazurite with calcite and pyrite, at a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6. The deep blue comes from lazurite, the white from calcite veining and the gold flecks from pyrite inclusions. The Afghan Sar-e-Sang deposit in Badakhshan has been mined for over 6,000 years, one of the longest continuously worked mining sites in human history, and ground Lapis produced ultramarine, the most valuable blue pigment in medieval and Renaissance art, costing more than gold and used by Vermeer, Raphael and Michelangelo. It appears in Tutankhamun's death mask and across ancient Sumeria, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome. Afghanistan remains the most significant source, with further material from Chile and Russia.

Lapis Lazuli is moderately soft at Mohs 5 to 6 and can scratch. Keep it away from harder stones and from prolonged water exposure, which can affect the calcite and pyrite within the rock, and store it where it will not be knocked.
