Desert Sunset Jasper is a chalcedony-family material of the quartz group, silicon dioxide at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its warm tan, cream, rust and sandy tones come from iron oxide and mineral variation during silica deposition, giving a muted earthy palette. Geologically it is the same Madagascan material as Polychrome Jasper, with Desert and Desert Sunset used as trade names for pieces with a quieter, warmer palette as distinct from the bolder multicolour Polychrome stone from the same deposit. The visual difference is significant enough to warrant separate retail treatment despite the identical geology. This material is sourced from Madagascar.
