Geological Information
Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate chloride, a feldspathoid mineral rather than a true feldspar, with a hardness of 5.5 to 6 and a cubic crystal structure. Its blue colour comes from sulphur and iron impurities, and the characteristic white streaks are calcite veining. Sodalite is frequently confused with lapis lazuli, but it lacks lapis's gold pyrite flecks and shows a more uniform blue with white veining. A notable deposit, the Princess Sodalite, was discovered in Ontario, Canada in 1891 and named during a royal visit; a rare variety called Hackmanite is tenebrescent, shifting colour under ultraviolet light and returning in darkness. This material is sourced chiefly from Brazil, Canada, and Namibia, with further deposits in India and Russia.
