Multiple colour zones, typically purple, green, blue, and yellow, develop in distinct bands within a single crystal or massive specimen, each zone recording a different trace impurity or radiation exposure at a different stage of crystal growth. The banding is therefore a growth record rather than a decorative accident, readable as a sequence. The material is natural and requires no treatment, though fluorite is sensitive to heat and to strong acids. Fluorite has been prized since Roman times, and the Latin fluere, to flow, gives the mineral its name after its use as a metallurgical flux; Roman murrhine cups carved from fluorite were among the most valuable luxury objects of the period.
