Geological Information
Rainbow Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a halide mineral crystallising in the cubic system at Mohs 4, in which multiple colour zones have developed within a single crystal or massive specimen. Each zone, typically purple, green, blue, yellow or clear, reflects a different trace impurity or a different degree of radiation exposure at a distinct stage of crystal growth, so the banding is a genuine chronological record rather than a decorative pattern. The mineral also gives its name to two English words: fluorescence, since fluorite was the first mineral observed to glow under ultraviolet light, and the older use of fluere, to flow, from its role as a metallurgical flux. Fluorite is sensitive to heat and to strong acids, and at Mohs 4 it is softer than most commercially traded stones. Roman murrhine cups carved from fluorite were among the most prized luxury objects of their period. China produces the majority of commercial multicolour material, with further sources in Mexico, the USA, the UK and South Africa.
