The Fossil Coral Heart is a pale cream to soft grey stone patterned with small flower-like rosettes scattered across the surface, each one a few millimetres across. Those rosettes are the fossilised structures of individual coral polyps, and their density varies from sparse to almost fully packed depending on the piece. The polish is smooth and the finish waxy rather than glassy. The Heart is a comfortable hand size with a solid, cool weight.

Geological Information
Fossil Coral is agatised fossilised coral: the original calcium carbonate skeleton of ancient coral polyps replaced by silica, chalcedony and opal, over millions of years. The flower-like rosettes across the surface are the preserved corallites, the cup-shaped structures each individual polyp lived within, and cutting through the fossil at different angles reveals them in cross-section or from above. Because the material is both a fossil and an agate, it carries the character of both, with colours ranging from chalky white through grey, yellow, brown, and pink depending on the mineral content of the replacing silica. The material is natural, the agatisation a fossilisation process rather than a treatment. Fossil coral occurs in regions once covered by ancient seas, with Michigan in the USA producing the well-known Petoskey Stone.
