Geological Information
Palm Root Fossil is silicified palm wood, a chalcedony pseudomorph in which silicon dioxide has entirely replaced the original plant tissue, Mohs 6.5 to 7 in the trigonal system. It is not a true wood: the source plant, the extinct palm genus Palmoxylon, had a trunk of fibrous parenchyma surrounding hollow vascular tubes rather than the growth-ringed tissue of a conifer or hardwood. Cut perpendicular to the trunk, those former vascular tubes appear as a field of small dots, the material's signature identifying pattern. Replacement took an estimated 10 to 40 million years as groundwater-carried silica gradually took the place of the original tissue, preserving grain and tube structure as spots, lines and flame-like figuring in tan, beige, brown, black, grey, white and occasionally orange, with the colours determined by trace elements present during silicification. Petrified Palm Wood holds status as the Louisiana state fossil, and the material is recognised alongside other petrified wood as a tangible connection to deep geological time. Indonesia holds the largest documented single deposit and is the source particularly prized for preserved root balls; Louisiana and Texas in the USA also produce the material.
