Geological Information
Ammolite is an organic gemstone formed from fossilized ammonite shell, composed of calcium carbonate as aragonite, with a Mohs hardness of roughly 3.5 to 4.5. Its spectral colour, spanning red through green to blue, arises from light interference within the thin aragonite layers of the fossilized shell rather than from pigment. Ammolite is one of only three biogenic gemstones recognized by CIBJO, alongside pearl and amber, and the Blackfoot people of Alberta have used it ceremonially for centuries, knowing it as Iniskim, or buffalo stone. Because the iridescent aragonite layer is extremely thin and fragile, commercial Ammolite is commonly stabilized or backed to protect it; where a piece is of composite construction this is standard, accepted practice and is disclosed. Gem-grade Ammolite is sourced almost exclusively from the Bearpaw Formation of Alberta, Canada.

Ammolite is a soft, organic material (Mohs 3.5 to 4.5) and should be handled gently and stored apart from harder stones to avoid scratching. As an aragonite (calcium carbonate) material it is acid-sensitive: keep it away from vinegar, citrus, household chemicals, perfumes, and cosmetics, and avoid prolonged soaking or ultrasonic cleaning. Wipe clean with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth.
