Geological Information
Fluorite is calcium fluoride (CaF2), a halide mineral that crystallises in the cubic system and is the reference stone for Mohs hardness 4. Its colour is highly variable - here green - arising from trace impurities, rare earth elements, and natural irradiation during crystal growth, with banding reflecting successive growth phases. Fluorite has perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions and can split cleanly along those planes if struck; the word fluorescence was coined from it, as it was the first mineral observed to glow under UV light. It was carved into prized vessels in ancient Egypt, Rome, and China, and English Blue John fluorite from Derbyshire has been mined for over 300 years. Its primary commercial source is China, with further material from Mexico, South Africa, the USA, the UK, Germany, and Argentina.
