Geological Information
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate, monoclinic and soft at Mohs 3.5, forming as irregular nodules with a chalky white body and grey veining. It was named after the Canadian mineralogist Henry How, who first described it in 1868. Its absorbent surface takes dye so readily that dyed howlite is widely sold as imitation turquoise and other stones, a 20th-century commercial practice. Sources include the USA, principally California, and Canada.
