Lepidolite is a lithium-bearing member of the mica family (potassium lithium aluminium silicate, Mohs 2.5-3, monoclinic system). Its lilac to pink-purple colour comes from manganese, though it also occurs colourless, yellow and grey, and its characteristic sparkle is produced by the platy mica structure. It is one of the principal sources of lithium in the Earth's crust, the same element that powers modern lithium-ion batteries, and is frequently found in association with tourmaline. The name comes from the Greek lepidos, meaning scale, a reference to its scaly appearance. Principal sources include Brazil, along with Russia, the USA, Zimbabwe and the Czech Republic.
