Black Tourmaline is the mineral Schorl, an iron sodium borosilicate of the Tourmaline group (Mohs 7-7.5, trigonal system), and the most abundant of the tourmaline varieties. Its black colour comes from a high iron content. Schorl is notable for strong piezoelectric and pyroelectric behaviour: rubbed or heated, it builds an electric charge and attracts fine dust, a demonstrable physical effect that led to its use in scientific instruments from the 18th century onward. Schorl is found globally in granites, pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, with principal commercial sources including Brazil, the USA, Africa, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
