Geological Information
Garnet is not a single mineral but a group of related silicate minerals sharing the same cubic crystal structure, at Mohs 6.5 to 7.5, with deep red the most common colour though green, orange, yellow, brown and black also occur. The varieties, including pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular and andradite, each carry distinct chemistry and colour. The name likely derives from the Latin granatus, meaning grain or seed, referencing the resemblance of red garnet crystals to pomegranate seeds. Garnet is one of the oldest continuously used gemstones, found in Egyptian jewellery dating to 3100 BCE and extensively worked in Anglo-Saxon and Viking pieces, with exceptional garnet cloisonné in the Staffordshire Hoard. Sources include South Africa, India, Russia, Brazil, the USA, Sri Lanka and Tanzania; this material is from India.
