Geological Information
Glaucophane, sometimes sold under the trade name Que Sera, is a blue amphibole mineral, a sodium magnesium aluminium silicate crystallising in the monoclinic system at Mohs 6 to 6.5, with its blue to blue-grey colour arising from iron and magnesium content in the amphibole structure. It carries one of the more compelling origin stories in the mineral market: glaucophane forms only under high-pressure, low-temperature conditions and is the defining mineral of blueschist facies metamorphism, which means every piece records a subduction zone, oceanic crust driven deep into the earth and then returned to the surface. The California Franciscan Complex is the classic locality for that process. It is typically found intergrown with quartz, albite, white mica and garnet rather than in isolation, which is why worked pieces read as composites. Commercial material comes from California in the USA, Japan, Italy and Turkey.
