Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, formed when lava rich in silica cools too rapidly for crystal structures to develop, leaving behind an amorphous, glassy solid (Mohs 5-5.5). Its deep black colour comes from iron, magnesium, and other mineral impurities within the glass, and its characteristic conchoidal fracture produces exceptionally sharp edges, a property that made obsidian one of the most important toolmaking materials in human prehistory, valued for blades sharper than surgical steel. Black Obsidian is found in volcanic regions worldwide, including the USA, Mexico, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Turkey, and Armenia.

During the first burn, allow the wax to melt evenly to the edges to help prevent tunnelling. Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch (12 mm) of wax remains. Remove the Black Obsidian accent stone before it becomes surrounded by melted wax, and keep it out of reach of small children, as it can present a choking hazard and its edges may be sharp.
