Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral in the Sulfate family, forming in the monoclinic system with a Mohs hardness of only 2-2.5. Its name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, a fitting reference to the stone's soft, silky lustre and pale, luminous colouring. Selenite typically forms in fibrous, striated masses ranging from white to fully colourless, and Mexico's Cave of the Crystals at Naica, discovered only in 2000, holds selenite formations exceeding 10 metres in length, among the largest mineral crystals ever documented. Thin slabs of selenite were once used as a window material in ancient Mesopotamia and Rome, prized for the way it let soft light pass through. Morocco is the primary commercial source today, with additional material coming from Mexico, the USA, Poland, and Australia.

During the first burn, allow the wax to melt evenly to the edges to help prevent tunnelling. Discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch (12 mm) of wax remains. Remove the Selenite accent stone before it becomes surrounded by melted wax, and keep it out of reach of small children once removed. Selenite is water-soluble and very soft; clean it only by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, never by rinsing or soaking.
