Red Jasper is a variety of Chalcedony within the Quartz family, composed of silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its deep red colour comes from hematite, an iron oxide, distributed through the fine-grained silica matrix. Red Jasper is one of the most widely distributed and historically documented varieties of jasper, used in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and across Europe as a seal stone and protective amulet, and named among the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate. This piece is untreated, sourced from deposits found in Brazil, India, Russia, and the USA.
