Sunstone is a variety of feldspar, most often oligoclase or labradorite, prized for its aventurescence, a metallic shimmer caused by light reflecting off tiny hematite or goethite platelet inclusions within the stone. This effect gives Sunstone its warm orange to red-brown glow and shifting glitter as it catches the light. Fine red Sunstone is found almost exclusively in Oregon, USA, where it forms in volcanic lava flows and holds the distinction of being the state's official gemstone; other sources include India, Norway, and Canada.
