Prasiolite is the green variety of quartz, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, its pale green produced by iron after heat treatment of specific amethyst; the trade name Green Amethyst is commercially dominant but mineralogically inaccurate, since the stone is no longer amethyst once green. Natural prasiolite is extremely rare, found almost exclusively at Brazil's Montezuma mine, and almost all retail material, this piece included, is heat-treated amethyst, a standard and stable industry process. Brazil is the primary source, with limited material from Arizona, USA.
