Geological Information
Green Aventurine is a variety of quartz, a silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its characteristic glittering effect, called aventurescence, is caused by light reflecting off flat parallel platelets of fuchsite mica within the stone, which also gives it its green colour. It takes its name from the Italian a ventura, meaning "by chance," a reference to the accidental discovery of aventurine glass. It is often confused with jade but is distinguishable by its sparkle and quartz composition, and was used extensively in ancient Chinese and Tibetan carving traditions. This material is sourced from India and Brazil, with further deposits in Russia, Tanzania and China.
