Black Onyx is a microcrystalline chalcedony, a variety of quartz, with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and a trigonal crystal structure. True onyx is a banded chalcedony defined by alternating black and white layers, but almost all commercial Black Onyx begins as natural grey or pale banded chalcedony that is colour-treated to a deep, even black. This piece is dyed: the sugar-acid or iron-nitrate process used to produce the solid black colour was standardised in the agate-cutting workshops of Idar-Oberstein, Germany, in the nineteenth century, and the resulting colour is stable and permanent. Onyx holds one of the longest continuous records of any black gemstone, carved into cameos, intaglios, amulets, and mourning jewellery across Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian cultures. Most Black Onyx on the market today is sourced from Brazil, with additional material from India and a long historical association with the German cutting houses.
