Geological Information
Black Agate is a banded chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz (silicon dioxide), trigonal and Mohs 7, here shot through with natural clear-to-grey quartz. Almost all commercial black agate is natural grey banded chalcedony that has been dyed using a sugar-acid or iron nitrate process to produce the deep black colour; this piece is dyed by that standard, stable method, which has been used in the agate trade since the 19th century and was standardised in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. The clear quartz veining is natural and untreated. Sources include Brazil (primary), India, and Germany.
