Grey Agate is a colour variety of Banded Agate rather than a separately classified stone, a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide crystallising in the trigonal system at Mohs 7. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony within the quartz family, formed through successive layers of silica deposited within a cavity over time. It is common industry practice for coloured agate to be dyed or otherwise colour-enhanced to achieve vivid, saturated tones. The grey and cream banding here comes from cyclic silica deposition with varied mineral trace content, each layer recording a separate deposition event as silica-rich hydrothermal fluids filled a cavity in the host rock.
