Snow White Agate is a trade name for White Agate, a chalcedony variety within the quartz family: silicon dioxide, trigonal in crystal system, at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its white to milky body colour results from minimal iron, manganese, and other colouring trace elements in the microcrystalline silica, placing it at the cleanest end of the chalcedony spectrum, and faint banding is visible in some pieces while others run close to uniform. The open crystal-lined cavities seen across this material are druzy pockets, formed where silica-rich fluid filled a void in the host rock and the final growth phase crystallized inward rather than closing solid. The material is natural, with no treatment or dye applied. Agate takes its name from the Achates River in Sicily, recorded by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, and holds one of the longest continuous records of decorative use of any stone, appearing in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman seals, amulets, and inlay work, while White Agate specifically has been used across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Asian traditions in association with purification and mental clarity.
