Geological Information
Dalmatian Jasper is an igneous rock composed of feldspar and quartz with black tourmaline spots, at a Mohs hardness of 6 to 7. Its cream to beige body colour comes from the feldspar-quartz groundmass, while the dark spotting is produced by crystals of black tourmaline, or by iron oxide in some material, distributed through the rock as it formed. Despite the trade name it is not a true jasper; jasper is a microcrystalline quartz, whereas this is a genuine igneous rock, and the name reflects the spotted appearance rather than the mineralogy. The material requires no treatment and the pattern is entirely natural. There is no distinct ancient tradition attached to the stone, which is a comparatively recent entrant to the crystal market. Mexico is the primary commercial source.
