Rainbow Moonstone is sold universally under this trade name but is technically a white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar (Mohs 6-6.5, monoclinic system), rather than true orthoclase moonstone. Its vivid blue adularescent flash is caused by light diffraction between lamellar albite and orthoclase layers, and is typically stronger and more vivid than the flash in traditional cream moonstone. The adularescent effect and market positioning are identical to classic moonstone, and it carries the same lunar tradition with a stronger association with intuition in modern practice. Principal source is India, along with Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
