Black Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, silicon dioxide formed when silica-rich lava cools too rapidly for crystals to form, amorphous and at a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5, its jet-black colour from iron, magnesium and other mineral impurities. Its conchoidal, shell-like fracture produces extremely sharp edges, a property that made obsidian one of the most important tool materials in human prehistory, used for blades for over 700,000 years and capable of an edge sharper than surgical steel. This material is sourced from Mexico, with further deposits in the USA, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Turkey and Armenia.
